Emmanuel I. Mikrogiannakis
Professor of Ancient History at the University of Athens
He was born in the Amira of Viannos, the martyrdom region of Crete, known for the mass executions of all its adult men during World War II. Then at the age of 8 he lost his father and all his male relatives.
In all levels of Education he excelled.
Post-graduate studies, as a scholarship holder of the I.K.Y., were carried out in Germany, at the University of Göttingen.
During his academic development he passed through all levels of the university hierarchy. He was President of the Department of History and Archaeology for many years, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens (1989-2001) and Senator.
In these capacities and as a member of a university faculty whose departments cover World Culture (especially Greek), he was instrumental in establishing a Department of Foreign Cultures, and through his teaching and publications (100 books and articles in scientific journals) he promoted research and contributed to a deeper knowledge and understanding of the cultural phenomenon.
In particular, this activity is broken down as follows:
At the University he discovered two courses, compulsory for all students:
– Greek culture of the classical period

He taught and gave countless lectures in Greece and in major universities all over the world: Princeton, MIT, Moscow, Taipei, Kiev, Lille, Cairo, Lima (Peru).
He has contributed in whole or in part to the establishment of a Chair of Hellenic Culture in Taipei (National University), Taiwan and in New Delhi, India (Nehru University).
He conducted postgraduate seminars on Greek culture, spirit and sporting ideals at the Olympic Academy with students from all over the world.
He has participated in many international conferences.
He is an honorary professor of the National Defence School (SETHA), President of the Philological Association “PARNASSOS” and member of many Scientific Societies in his field.
