Biography

Apostolos Nikolaidis

Professor Apostolos Nikolaidis was born in Vasiliko, Ioannina. He completed his basic studies in Pogoniani of Ioannina. He studied Theology at the Universities of Athens and Bonn, Germany. Postgraduate studies in the systematic branch of Theology (Ethics and Sociology of Religion, Political Theology) were carried out in Bonn and Bochum, Germany. In 1979 he was appointed Professor of Secondary Education where he served until 1997. In 1993 he was awarded a doctorate at the Department of Social Theology of the University of Athens on the topic “The New Anthropology of Religion in the Philosophy of Ernst Bloch” with a grade of “excellent”. From 1993 to 1997 he served as a research associate in the Department of Religious Studies, Philosophy and Sociology of the same Department on secondment from Secondary Education. In 1997 he was elected Assistant Professor in the same Department and in the same Division with the subject “Sociology of Religion”. He was elected Associate Professor in the same subject in 2001. In 2005 he was appointed to the rank of Primary Professor in the field of “Sociology of Religion and Social Ethics”. He was a) Senator for the academic year. He has been the Convenor for the academic year 1997-1998 and the two years 2009-2011. b) Director of two Departments for three academic years. c) President of the Department of Social Theology of the University of Athens for the two years 2009-2011. He served as a) Deputy President of the Department for the two years 2011-13 and 2013-2015. b) Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Secondary Ecclesiastical Education at the Ministry of Social Theology for the period 2009-2013, c) Member of the Board of Directors of the Student Residence of the University of Athens (2011-2014). In 2008-2010 he represented the Department in the Research Committee of the University of Athens. In the Department of Social Theology he teaches the courses: Christian and Social Ethics, Bioethics, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Christianity, Philosophy of Religion, Sociology and Ecumenical Movement. From 1997 to the present, he has been teaching continuously in the Graduate Program of the Department entitled “Religious Studies”. He has supervised doctoral dissertations and specialization theses (masters), and continues to serve on several three-member advisory committees for masters and doctoral dissertations. She taught for three years the course “Ethics and Gender” in the inter-school MSc “Religion and Gender”, and during the academic year 2009-2010 she participated with a lecture in the MSc in Biology at the University of Athens on the relationship between Bioethics and Christian Bioethics. In addition to the University of Athens, he also taught at the University of Athens. – At the Athens School of Ecclesiastical Studies for fifteen years (1990-2005) the courses Dogmatics, Symbolism and Philosophy. – At the Parenting Schools of the Mental Health Center for twenty-five years (1990-2015). – At the People’s University of the Society of Friends of the People for eighteen years (semi-annual seminars, 1997-2015). – At the Higher School of Police Officers for one year. – At the PEK of West Attica for one year. – Naval Warfare School for four years. – National Security School for eighteen years (1997-2015). He took an active part in many international and domestic Scientific Conferences. Since 2006 he has been involved in the organization and presides over the annual Pedagogical Conference of the Scientific Section of the “M. Vasilios” Association, which takes place in Athens and other cities in Greece. He gave and gives lectures in many parts of our country and abroad. He is a member of three Synodal Committees, dealing with problems of the Family, the Environment and Bioethics, as well as a member of the Boards of Directors of other Public Benefit Institutions. Between 1988 and 1993 he was a producer of radio programmes on ecological issues. From September 2009 to August 2010 he was producer of the hourly live show on Interpersonal Relationships – Power Games on the same radio station.
